Curriculum and Supplies
Through fairy tales, myths, legends, fables, and classic children’s novels, students will be inspired to seek delight in reading. In class, teachers will lead explorations into literary structure, meaning, and purpose, while looking for evidence of “Big Ideas” throughout the selected texts. These “Big Ideas” include concepts such as goodness, truth, beauty, faith, and courage.
HISTORY: (Thursdays only)
Students will follow the course of global events from 1600 to 1850. Geography and information from the CC timeline cards will be included in context. This class will feature history discussion as well as embodied learning through various activities and hands-on projects.
The aim in Fourth Grade is to solidify the proper, automatic use of language through the four-pronged disciplines of spelling, reading, writing, and grammar. Regarding spelling, Fourth Graders at Heritage will begin their year reviewing the 75 phonograms used in the English language. They will continue to use these phonograms as the basis for building words completing the four-year, comprehensive spelling program begun in First Grade. Regarding reading, they will finish working through level four of an instructional reading program where they will be exposed to a variety of quality writers and delightful literature while cementing their phonetic ability to decode words and delighting them with beautiful language. Regarding writing, they will continue to develop their handwriting skills through daily copywork practice, 10-15 minutes per day. Through their course in English grammar, they will continue to prepare for writing by using the classical techniques of memorization, dictation, and narration while covering a full range of grammar topics, including parts of speech, punctuation, sentence diagrams, and skills in beginning writing, storytelling, and dictionary skills. Poetry memorization will continue at this level with one poem memorized and recited every 3-6 weeks.

Choir is one of the most popular classes at Heritage! Through exposure to a varied musical repertoire, students discover great music in a fun and friendly environment. Younger children learn the joys of reading and making music by playing pitched and non-pitched instruments and through additional music play.
Topics covered in this course include music theory, rhythm drills, sight singing, aural skills training, listening, performance, and music history through composer study; music literacy and notational comprehension are emphasized. Throughout the year, students learn individual and group vocal technique and become comfortable with part-singing. Practice CD’s will be sent home at the beginning of each semester, and all students will have the opportunity to participate in a beautiful choral concert in the winter and the spring.

ART: Elements of Drawing and Design
Our God is a master artist and creation sings his praise. As his people, we are made to be creative. This class is designed to expose students to various art techniques and media, including pencil, marker, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, and more. Through structured projects, students will learn the basic elements of art (line, shape, color, and texture), drawing and design, three-dimensional study, perspective, composition, color theory, and basic art vocabulary. Artists and art history from the historical time period in focus (2019-2020: Modernity) will be studied.
Upper elementary, junior high, and high school students will visit a local artist or gallery during the year. Student artwork will be displayed at two art shows during the year. We look forward to helping each child use his God given talent for structured creativity.
For returning students, this course will build on the techniques learned in previous school year(s); it is also appropriate for students with no formal art background. Art assignments will be tailored to the level and ability of each student.
SCIENCE – PHYSICS/CHEMISTRY:
What is the Periodic Table? Why do cookies need baking powder? How does a battery work? What are Newton’s Laws of Motion? Through this study of chemistry and physics students will learn the answers to these questions and many more. They will begin to understand and admire the order, principles, beauty, and intricacy of God’s creation. This course covers properties of matter, states of matter, atoms, compounds, mixtures, mechanics, energy, sound, heat, light, electricity, magnetism, simple machines and more.
This class will have a strong emphasis on class and nature journaling which develops two of the most important scientific skills: observation and documentation. Learning to really see is a skill that must be learned and practiced. Be sure to plan time every week to get outside and look around. Charlotte Mason said, "Never be within doors when you can rightly be without."
As we study together, we will gain an even deeper understanding of our amazing Creator who has made all things well, and who has given us a role in taking care of the things He has made. We can say with the psalmist, “O Lord, how many are your works! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” Psalm 104:24.
